Sent Bill to Pit Bull Owners

Tuesday I sent a letter and a copy of my vet bill to the owners of the pit bulls that attacked Princess Jewel and me.. Since they had dog bite exclusion in their home owners policy, Texas law says they have to pay all my expenses. I sent them a letter with the bill informing them--nicely--that this was a copy of my vet bill, all detailed. I also told them that it would take a while for me to get billed for what my insurance did not pay at the ER for 2 visits, to the orthopedic hand surgeon for 4 visits, for physical therapy, the EMS that came out when the lady made the 911 call. Also for the two antibiotics and pain meds (I didn't take any of the pain meds, tho). When I got them all, I would wend the bill for that.

My vet bill actually came to $637 after I got my 5% senior discount and I had been charged $8.35 for pill packs which I failed to get and it was taken off. And that is not bad since this happened on Saturday afternoon after hours (he closes at noon) and he came in Saturday and then again on Sunday, his only full day off, to tend to Jewel. She was so traumatized on Saturday that they could not bathe her (she had peed and pooped on herself), but cleaned her as best he and the tech he called in could do, gave her heavy antibiotics, sedated her and put her in ICU. Gave her a bath the next morning, shaved some areas, cleaned all punctures and gash, Oh, did a full blood work up to make sure about her liver and kidneys before starting her on antibiotics to determine which would be best. Liver and Kidneys are great, so no problem there. Then the antibiotic pills she wa on was almost $10.50 0 each, so was $145+change. And 2 days in the ICU unit. I think that was very reasonable for after hours, having to have a tech come in, all the mds, bath, hospital stay, blood work, wound cleaning of many puncture wounds and gashes, heavy duty antibiotics, specail food, etc.

If I do not hear from them, I will take them to court when I get the total of my expenses. I didn't ask for one penny more than what I was and will be out. Everyone thinks I should ask for more due to the fact I couldn't use my hand for 6 weeks, and hae nerve damage that may or may not heal, am now terrified to taking her for walks due to fear o f meeting up with a loose dog. If I go to court, I may ask for that. And I have found out that if the judge rules for them to pay and they don't, I can take a lien agaisnt their house and other property and I will.

Good for you! You are much nicer than I am, I would have added something for the pain & suffering (trauma) & time for the whole event. I hope they appreciate your kindness!

I'm so glad you've done this, and I wish you the best of luck in the process!

Hope you're feeling better and that, eventually, you'll feel more comfortable taking walks with your dog. Kind thoughts coming your way.

Good for you! If people are going to be irresponsible, they need to pay for it.

my stepdaughter had a similar experience although it ended up costing them quite a bit. I don't believe they got anything back. I believe the insurance might have covered it but the person who brought the attacking dog wasn't well known to the host and they had trouble tracker her down. it was also a pit and had only been adopted a couple of days earlier by the mother of the person who brought it to the party having no idea of the dog's temperament. it should have never have been there. my stepdaughter's doodle is ok now but it took a while.

I am so sorry you are having to go through all of this. I hope they stay up and you don’t have to go to court.

If they have a decent attorney they will be advised that paying what you are asking for will be a much cheaper way out for them than going to court. Good luck and stick with it.
